SAD ABE AND PEGS (WHY DID JULY TO ME?)

Abe Dunovits’ latest multi-media art offering takes him into familiar territory: Multiple self-portraits drawn with cheap colour pens on acid free framer’s cardboard framed in old CD boxes. Colour clothing pegs are also included, as a continuation of his previous performance work with pegs. Taking a bow to Leigh Bowery and Andy Warhol, Abe Dunovits casually crucifies himself in front of a camera with pegs. The faded nature of pegs is also related to his life in Australia. notions of identity and manhood/womanhood inherent in pegs. Most materials used are recycled.

In addition to his 20 year career in music and experimental performance in Perth, Abe has been working as a visual artist for 15 years. He has exhibited his solo work at Artplace Gallery, PICA and Fremantle Arts Centre among other venues. He is well known for his wire and junk wood sculptures such as the Red Monster outside Kidogo Art House in Fremantle and his work belongs to art collections such as Western Australian Ministry for the Arts, Fremantle Hospital and John Stringer. Highly commended for his oil paintings by the Town of Vincent and the City of Melville, Abe won the DADAA award at the Fremantle Hospital art award Open Minds, Open Doors in 2008 for his self portraiture.

Abe’s fifth solo show happens at Lick Clothing store, in Fremantle, viewable from the 29th of June until the end of July.
